If you are trying to find a better method to monetize your website, then considering selling direct adsmight be a excellent choice. For the most part people automatically take for granted that techniques like Adsense and affiliate marketing are going to be their best options, and they might be. Selling direct ads can either act as a supplemental form of income from your website or your main income. If you have not considered direct ad sales then here are a few things to consider.
Firstly, let’s quickly look at precisely what selling direct ads means. Essentially, you are selling advertising space on your website, much the same way that a magazine does. However, instead of offering a page spread you are offering banner space. This could be a big banner in your header or a small 250×250 in your sidebar. Anywhere that you currently have Adsense ads or banner could be a potential candidate. You can even sell ad space in your footer.
Now that you know what direct ads are, here is a quick look at how to do it. All you need to do is create a small advertising page. These pages differ greatly if you take a quick look around the web. A number of are quite short and have nothing more than contact information and rates. On the other end of the spectrum are pages that have rates, contact information, and detailed website analytics. It is really up to you.
The most important thing to consider is how much you are going to charge. Unfortunately there is not a blanket rate that fits in all niches or with all websites. It really will vary on a case by case basis. When choosing how much to charge, there are several variables to think about. The first is what niche you are in. The more competitive the niche, the more you can charge. This is often true if you have a general website as well. An additional thing to consider is your level of traffic. More traffic is always better, however if your traffic is very targeted or built on repeat visitors then you can charge extra. A further thing to consider is your Google rankings for various keywords. If you are ranking well for more than a few keywords then this could be used to justify higher rates as well.
So the big question is whether or not selling direct ads is something that would work in your website. In most cases, it is possible, however your niche will dictate how successful it is. Another thing to consider is whether or not these extra ads will hassle your readers. In most cases it will not however if you do see a slight dip in traffic, especially repeat visitors then you may want to try and show these ads in a less intrusive way. A simple “Sponsors” section in your sidebar or header can be a great way to sell direct ads and still uphold a good relationship with your readers.
You should also decide whether or not your ads will have follow or no-follow links. Google doesn’t particularly like websites to sell follow links. It is usually best to make sure and let advertisers know that the links will be no-follow If they buy direct ad spots regularly on a number of websites, they probably already take for granted that the link with have the no-follow attribute.
Remember, selling direct adswill not compromise your current monetization methods. Creating an advertising page takes very little time and in the end the benefit will be well worth the 15 minutes it takes to create a direct ad sales page.
